While writing can be fun and rewarding, it is not an easy process. Between outlining, actually writing, and editing, a lot of work goes into it. Luckily, in today’s online world, there are a variety of resources to make the writing process more manageable. In this and upcoming blog posts, I will break down these available tools to help you choose the one that best suits your needs.
One of the most time-consuming parts of writing—arguably, as time-consuming as the writing itself—is editing. The entire editing process can be daunting, with one of the essential aspects being to check for grammatical errors in your writing. When submitting a finished piece, whether that’s a novel manuscript or an essay, you want to ensure your writing is polished and free of any grammar issues.
No pressure, right?
Luckily, Grammarly is here to help.
What Grammarly Does
Grammarly provides real-time writing suggestions to help its users communicate effectively. The software picks up on grammar and spelling mistakes, identifies complicated sentence structures, punctuation errors, and more.
I find Grammarly to be useful for both beginner and experienced writers. Every writer makes mistakes, myself included. Grammarly picks up on these mistakes and highlights them, making the editing process a little bit easier.
I will caution, however, that Grammarly’s suggestions are not foolproof. Depending on the context you are writing in and the tone you are going for, such as if you are writing personally or professionally, some of their suggestions may not be helpful to you.
Furthermore, it’s my opinion as a bestselling author that Grammarly should not replace the help of a professional editor when it comes to a manuscript. Instead, Grammarly can help you produce a polished draft ready to submit to an editor.
An Option to Suit Everyone’s Needs
Grammarly has enough plans to offer an option for everyone.
The base plan is free and provides basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation checking. It’s an excellent option for everyday, basic writing.
If that’s not enough, for $12 a month users can access Grammarly’s premium plan, which provides more in-depth suggestions. Premium offers suggestions on sentence structures, tone and formality, fluency, word choice, and more. It is an excellent option for both work and school.
Finally, business owners can purchase a business premium plan that gives their employees access to Grammarly Premium and extra features such as the ability to select a brand tone and insertable snippets to save employees time while writing. This one is priced based on the business, so if you’re interested, you’ll have to inquire.
Grammarly’s Availability
Perhaps one of the best parts of Grammarly is that you can use it from almost any platform you are working on. The team has done a great job integrating the software with many others. For example, it can be added to your browser as an extension, the Microsoft Office Suite, and even Android and IOS devices.
The Final Verdict: Grammarly is a must-have for writers, everywhere.
Even on the free plan, Grammarly is almost certainly better than any proofreading or editing software that comes baked-in to your favorite word processor like Microsoft Word. For that reason alone, signing up for the free plan is more than worth it.
But, at just $12 a month, moving to a premium subscription would also be worthwhile for any writer who’s writing more than somewhere around 5,000 words a month. Grammarly premium elevates your writing and provides in-depth suggestions and flexibility allow it to be a helpful program for any writer out there.
It’s a great software, but as I emphasized earlier, don’t take everything it suggests at face value. Use it, appreciate it, and question everything.
Now that you know all about Grammarly, are you ready to begin editing and publishing? If so, MindStir Media provides a variety of publishing services once you decide you are prepared to take that step. With multiple publishing packages available from eBooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers, MindStir Media provides all the resources you need during the publishing process at a great value.
